Have you ever wished there were more hours in the day? Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you work you just can’t seem to get everything done? Last week we talked about the reasons why we keep the heavy burdens of life to ourselves. Whether it’s because we feel like we can’t trust other people, or we don’t want to be a burden to others, it doesn’t change the fact that we feel overwhelmed. As we read through Exodus 18:19-23 we’ll focus on the importance of our God-given task, how we can share the workload, and what it will accomplish in our lives.
“Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave.”
What I love about this part of the passage is that Jethro doesn’t “be-little” the responsibility that Moses has. Jethro re-affirms the plan and responsibility God has given to Moses and does not try to “water-down” its work-load. He restates Moses’s purpose before God, and stresses its importance. Sometimes, we can forget the important task God has given us when we decide to carry the heavy work-load it brings alone. We ask ourselves questions like: “Is this really something God wants me to do?” or “Am I really making an impact?”. We question because we carry too much of it all by ourselves, when the task is still important and purposeful.
“But select capable men from all the people – men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain – and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.”
God doesn’t just want us to share the workload with just anybody, He understands that we need people that we can trust. Having fellowship with other believers and sharing the mission of God’s plan for your life, will lighten your load. Just as Moses was told to appoint “capable men” who “fear God”, we need people in our lives that we can also trust to share the burden.
“If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”
Trusting people with the workload isn’t just going to make your load lighter, its going to make the job more “satisfying” and fruitful. As one man, it was impossible for Moses to minister to over hundreds of thousands of people, and it was wearing him out. How many of us are doing the impossible today? How many of us feel worn out? We limit ourselves by only choosing to trust ourselves and we leave the task unsatisfying. Trust in God, and trust in God’s people. God wants to reaffirm the important task he has for your life, but he never meant for you to go through it alone.
Are you feeling worn out today? What steps can you take to share your heavy load you carry with others you can trust? God has given you an important task and purpose, don’t be afraid to invite God’s people into your life. Don’t be afraid to share the workload.
